TRANSFORMING THE WAY FANS WATCH HOCKEY

FAN XP INITiative
about
SportsX, a collaboration between MLSE Digital Labs (technology and digital innovation arm of MLSE) and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are developing a mixed reality enhancement to the way fans watch hockey.

1

Objective
Create a significant in-person, in-venue upgrade to the viewing experience, bringing broadcast and video game capabilities to those watching in-person.

2

How It Works
Real time stats are taken from NHL Edge – the League’s Puck and Player tracking technology system, which has been deployed in all 32 NHL arenas and is used in all NHL games.

3

Outcome
Through AR glasses, SportsX developed an overlay to allow fans access data from NHL Edge, which takes viewers deeper into the play on the ice. The overlay focuses on complementing broadcast, appealing to the next generation of fans and enhancing the way people consume the game today.

we’re pushing the boundaries of technology by giving fans access TO information about the game in real time- which previously was reserved for hockey analytics experts post-game.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
NHL Edge is fully operational in all 32 NHL arenas, and features infrared technology embedded in pucks and on players that provide dozens of new insights for fans on things like puck possession, speed and distance travelled. The system has the ability to generate nearly one million three-dimensional coordinates and data points over the course of a regulation game.
AWS Outposts
To ensure the puck and player insights reach fans in real time, an AWS Outpost has been installed near Scotiabank Arena. The AWS Outpost is a fully managed and configurable compute and storage rack that seamlessly brings AWS’s broad array of cloud services on site for workloads that require low latency. The AWS Outpost eliminates the need to send all data to the AWS Region by performing compute at the edge of the network, reducing latency between what’s happening on the ice and what fans see on their screens.

During the game, data is collected in real time from the NHL’s Puck and Player tracking system and sent to the AWS Outpost. Immediately, the data is analyzed using a combination of MEC compute and cloud technologies and is then distributed to the AR application so fans can see it at the venue.
